Music Improv 1: Foundations

You don't need to be a trained singer to make musical improv!

Musical improv is part improvisation, part listening, and part play. In this beginner-friendly musical improv course, you'll learn how to create songs on the spot, build choruses as a group, support your scene partners, and use music to heighten characters and relationships.

We'll explore classic musical theater styles, experiment with melody and rhythm, and practice turning improvised scenes into songs in ways that feel approachable and fun.

Each week includes warm-ups, guided exercises, games, and plenty of supported practice. You'll receive practical coaching to help you grow more confident making musical choices, listening to your teammates, and creating something together.

By the end of eight weeks, students should be able to:

• Create simple improvised songs with recognizable structure.
• Build and support group choruses.
• Use listening, agreement, and collaboration to develop songs together.
• Transition from improvised scenes into songs.
• Use music to heighten characters, emotions, and relationships.

Music Improv 1 builds on the scene-work and relationship skills developed in Improv 101 and 201, introducing the musical tools and techniques students will continue developing in Music Improv 2.

Prerequisite: PHIT Improv 201 (or equivalent experience). Students should be comfortable initiating and sustaining two-person scenes, creating emotionally grounded characters and relationships, and supporting their scene partners.

Vocal Experience: No formal vocal training required! Shower singing is perfectly fine. However, students should be comfortable singing aloud and able to carry a simple tune.

Adults 18+

Class size: Enrollment is capped at 12 students to support individual coaching, practice, and stage time.

Location: Hamilton Family Arts Center, 62 N. 2nd Street, Philadelphia.

Showcase: All eight-week classes conclude with an optional showcase performance — a celebratory opportunity to share your work with friends and family.

Showcase Prep / Make-Up Hold: The week after the final class is reserved for a make-up class if needed. Otherwise, it becomes an optional showcase run-through — a chance to practice in a supportive room, review logistics, receive final notes, and meet other PHIT students. If the date is needed for a make-up class, alternate showcase preparation may be offered when possible, though availability is not guaranteed.

All registrations are final. No refunds, transfers, or credits toward future sessions for student withdrawals. Please review the complete class schedule and be certain you can attend before registering. All tuition must be paid in full before the first class.
